Today, Wednesday 21st April, saw David Whitton MSP announce the Common Thread Bursary Award for students at Queen Margaret University. The bursary is funded by Common Thread, an indigenous Scottish company which specialises in the caring and educating of young people in crisis.
The Common Thread Bursary Award will be open to postgraduate and undergraduate students studying courses in the School of Health and Social Sciences. The Award is also open to students from all courses who have experienced the care system (all applications and student details will be treated in the strictest confidence) or for those who can demonstrate a commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable young people.
David Whitton MSP said, "I am delighted to have announced the Award at the Parliamentary reception I hosted today, especially as I opened their most recent home in Kirkintilloch last September. Common Thread provides excellent facilities, therapies and care for many children in crisis and is at the forefront of the Scottish social care arena".
Common Thread Director, Julie Joseph commented: "Our vision for the Award is to encourage students to enter the profession of social care and assist them through their period of academic study. While applications from those with an experience of the care system may be considered favourably, it is not a prerequisite".
Rosalyn Marshall, Vice Principal of Queen Margaret University comments "Bursaries are a fantastic way to ease the financial pressure which students face today. We are proud to be partnering with this pioneering Scottish organisation and we thank Common Thread for its generosity to our students".
Common Thread is a model of excellence in providing care for young people in crisis. These young individuals are often victims of troubled family situations and this is frequently reflected in their behaviour. They are suitably placed in caring environments that allow them to fully integrate into society in a positive manner. The many success stories that Common Thread has had of children in residence are testimony to this.
